Vote Alert: ATR and COGC Urge the House to Vote YES on the Pompeo Amendment
ATR and COGC sent an alert to the House of Representatives today, urging members to adopt Congressman Mike Pompeo’s amendment to the CJS Appropriations bill. The Alert states:
All Members of the United States House of Representatives should support Rep. Mike Pompeo’s amendment to the Commerce and Justice, Science and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2013. The amendment would eliminate the Economic Development Administration, saving taxpayers billions and stopping wasteful government spending under the guise of economic “stimulus.”
Created in 1965 and charged with distributing money to economically unstable areas, the EDA quickly widened its scope, becoming a vehicle for extensive waste and fraud. The agency spends hundreds of millions each year and is expected to cost taxpayers more than $1.5 billion over the next four years.
In essence, the EDA is a codified “stimulus” agency, delivering taxpayer dollars to parochial projects under the guise of job creation. The last few years of federal “stimulus” and rampant unemployment have shown this approach to be utterly flawed. What’s more, the majority of the agency’s annual budget goes towards propping up its bloated bureaucracy while nearly a third of its funds are lost to waste, fraud and abuse.
Both the President and his bipartisan fiscal commission have supported eliminating the EDA. At the outset of the 2013 appropriations process, lawmakers should be eager to make such commonsense spending cuts that have bipartisan support.
Taxpayers deserve better
